Welcome change to abatement rules
Earlier this year the Department of Education issued Circular 3/2021 which stated that the first 50 days worked by a retired teacher, in a calendar year, would not impact on the retiree’s pension. However, the circular stated that from day 51 of employment onwards, there was a potential, subject to certain earning thresholds being breached, that the teacher’s pension could be reduced or abated.
The DE announced on 23 Nov that to boost the supply of substitute teachers, retired teachers returning to classrooms until the end of the current school term will not have their pensions reduced or abated.
Arrangements for the 2022 calendar year are not addressed in this announcement. Further details will be available on this website when available.
