It is a huge source of pride to the Carysfort Commemoration Committee to have brought to print in the space of 8 months, a volume of articles worthy of marking the occasion of the 30th Anniversary of the closure of Carysfort College in 1988. What started out as a possible plaque at the front of the college was soon replaced by a commemorative volume which we hope you have all delved into with some delight since the weekend.
The commemorative volume was the brainchild of two members of our committee, Séamus Mac Gabhann and Áine Hyland, who impressed on us the importance of giving an opportunity to former graduates and staff members to reminisce in writing their experiences of their time in Carysfort. To all the contributors to the volume, we owe a huge debt of gratitude. We are particularly indebted to Séamus and Áine themselves. Séamus took on the mammoth task of producing and editing the volume on our behalf. Áine, our keynote speaker at Saturday’s commemoration, penned the central article on the events around the closure of the college, which will in time be regarded as the definitive historical account of the closure due to her meticulous records of the events and meetings of the time and her assiduous trawling of the all other papers relating to the closure since. To these two wonderful people we are immense indebted.
