Become an IDL Tutor

The IDL (Indirect Dyslexia Learning) System covers the building blocks of learning English, using computers for a multi-sensory approach, and a tutor to ensure that the student makes progress. Indirect, in that the computer offers the main interaction, not the tutor.

Dyslexia, from Professor Berlin’s original use of the term, in the 1880s, meaning ‘difficulty with words’.

Learning, it is a learning system, not a teaching one.

Jack Denner, who developed IDL in the early 1980s, followed the philosophy that all children learn differently. While most children cope with the group presentation of the classroom situation, some need different stimuli. IDL uses a multi-sensory approach for just this reason. It uses touch, hearing, sight, and speech.

We use an IDL assessment, to measure reading and spelling ages, and to look for particular difficulties. We also apply a colour test, to address the Irlen syndrome. IDL is not looking to define problems, but to address difficulties in reading and spelling. The student attends for a 3-month term, and is then re-assessed to monitor progress. Our results show at least 6 months improvement for 3 months attendance.

While IDL is specifically aimed at reading and spelling, students also gain social benefits, such as improved concentration and self-confidence.

We are looking for interested people to open their own centres, to expand the IDL network in Ireland. A tutor could work from home, or in a local resource centre. A solid foundation in reading and spelling is vital to our children’s education. If you have an interest in this area, we would like to hear from you.

Substitute Work

Substitute pay is currently €196 per day (inclusive of holiday pay entitlement) up to and including day 40 [Rate applicable from 1stSeptember, 2008].  Thereafter, i.e. from day 41, the rate increases to the full teacher’s annual rate that you would have, if you were still teaching, and divided by 183 to give your daily rate (inclusive of holiday entitlement).  This continues for 50 more days (total of 90), after which pension will be abated.

Retired teachers doing regular substitute work are strongly advised to join the INTO as a substitute member, for the protection afforded by such membership.  The special low rate for substitute membership is €100 per annum.  Forms are available from the Staff Representative or directly from INTO Head Office, and completed forms are returned to INTO Head Office.  Substitute members become members of the Branch encompassing the location of the school where they first teach in any school year.  If they move to another Branch area, they remain members of the original Branch until the end of that school year.

INCOME LEVY.

The new Income Levy - 2% - is deducted from all pensions except those with less than €15,000 (€30,000 for married couples) per annum for those under 65 years or less than €20,000 (€40,000 for married couples) for those over 65 years or for those who hold Medical Cards.  These thresholds are exclusive of any Social Welfare Pension e.g. Widows/Widowers Pension.  Such Social Welfare Pensions are not taken into account when assessing the threshold.

Persons who hold a Medical Card pay no levies - neither Income Levy (2%) or Health Levy (4%).

All persons over 70 years had eligibility for a Medical Card last year so the Department of Education had no difficulty in excluding all over 70's from the Income Levy.

This automatic entitlement was withdrawn in 2009 and the over 70's Medical Card is now means tested.
